Timber, Aluminium, or Composite for Your Doors?

If you are looking to secure your home, you need to buy the best doors that you can find. However, security is not your only consideration. You should also be considering the price of the door, the aesthetics of the door, and the amount of energy transferred. Energy transfer is one of the leading causes of high home expenses for people. During the winter, you run your heater to keep your house warm. During the summer, you run your air conditioner. If your home is not well-insulated, then the indoor temperature will be much more difficult to maintain.

Insulation

Commonly, your walls are insulated, which means that they won’t transfer much energy. However, your windows and doors are often weak points in your insulation. You can reduce energy transfer in your windows by buying double-glazed windows and using thick curtains. For your doors, you should consider what type of external sliding doors will be best for you. If your highest concern is insulation, then a timber door is probably your best option. Timber is a great insulator. Engineered timber is even more effective at this.

Engineered timber means that thin layers of timber are glued and sealed to one another to form larger sheets of timber. The wood as well as the glue and sealant help to insulate the door. If your biggest concern is the longevity of the door, aluminium is likely a better option.

Longevity

You need to make sure that your door is going to last as long as you would like. An external door will be facing the elements all the time. You need to make sure that you have a door that can handle it. Aluminium is typically powder-coated. It is non-ferrous, which means that it won’t rust. If you want to have timber inside the door, then you need composite. Composite is typically timber on the inside and aluminium on the outside.

That gives you the insulating and aesthetic qualities of timber with the longevity of aluminium. This is not to say that timber cannot handle the weather; you just need to make sure that you keep it coated and/or sealed. You will need to reapply the sealant or paint from time to time to keep it in good condition.

Price

The prices tend to be fairly similar. In some cases, aluminium is slightly less expensive than timber. However, engineered timber is very affordable because it is made from smaller pieces of timber. The manufacturers do not have to source large pieces of timber for their doors; they can bring together smaller pieces that cost less money from their suppliers. That will help you save money. Since a well-constructed door lasts a long time, you’ll save money on repairs as well.
